The Hogs

We raise a Duroc Yorkshire cross. This might not be for all people, but we feel it's best for us. We like the muscle and look of the Duroc boar. We also like the long body of the Yorkshire for bacon. Bacon, a Duroc boarBacon, a Duroc boarDuroc's tend to be more aggressive then the other hog breeds. We do not recommend this breed of hog for homesteaders unless you are hand raising them from a baby for tameness. One female and one male will give more homesteaders all the meat they need per year and have some feeder pigs to sell to pay for the feed bills. This makes your pork free of charge, but not work. Some people pasture butcher their hogs, we do not. While we possess the knowledge to do so, we do not possess the stomach for it. We take ours to the butcher. We found that the money made from selling the extra feeders pay's for this bill also. Be sure you know your butcher so you get your meat back!
